Germantown Baseball League Hits a "Home Run" with Inaugural Event

The Germantown Baseball League (GBL), in conjunction with the Germantown Parks and Recreation Department held the first ever Home Run Derby and Speed Pitch Contest in Germantown, on Saturday, June 5, 2010. Over 700 boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 18 participated in the Derby. Each participant had the opportunity to hit as many pitches as possible for 1.5 minutes per player on each team within the Germantown Baseball League. Then players could enter an additional contest to gauge their speed and prowess in a pitching contest with a Radar Gun timing their pitch speed.

The Mayor and Alderman of Germantown assisted with each age division's medal award ceremony and made comments to an extremely happy crowd at the Home Run Derby Grandstand. Younger brothers and sisters of the participants played on inflatable jump houses during the Home Run Derby while their older siblings were belting out home runs on the fields at Cameron Brown Park in Germantown on Saturday night. The evening was a great success for all involved. Bob Bean, Operations Vice President of the Germantown Baseball League, provided master of ceremonies duties for the evening. Bob Bean expressed sincere gratitude to the City of Germantown, the Parks and Recreation Department of Germantown, and the 250 coaches and volunteers that help to deliver this community.
